Recently, under the guidance of the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, ASR Microelectronics, in collaboration with Huawei, ZTE, and Nokia Bell Labs, successfully completed the key technology verification for 5G lightweight (RedCap) based on ASR's newly launched 5G RedCap commercial chip platform, ASR1903. The testing covered both laboratory and field environments.



Comprehensive Coverage of Key Laboratory Technology Verification

The RedCap series technology verification followed the specifications outlined by the 5G Promotion Group, including the “5G Enhanced Technology R&D Experiment RedCap Terminal Device Technical Requirements” and the “5G Enhanced Technology R&D Experiment RedCap Terminal Device Testing Methods.” Key test areas included:

RedCap UE Basic Capabilities and Service-Related Functions: Initial and dedicated bandwidth parts (BWP) for uplink and downlink, CD-SSB and NCD-SSB, peak rates for uplink and downlink 256QAM, VoNR voice functionality, etc.

UE Mobility and LTE/NR Dual-Mode Interoperability: Including cell reselection, intra- and inter-frequency handovers, redirection scenarios, etc.

UE Power Saving Technologies: C-DRX, e-DRX, measurement relaxation, connected state wakeup signal DCP, dynamic uplink transmission skip, early paging indication (PEI), UE assistance information reporting, etc.

5G Native Enhanced Capabilities: Low latency, high reliability, high-precision timing, etc.

Security and Encryption: Testing for encryption/integrity protection based on the ZUC algorithm.



Outstanding Performance in Field Testing

During field tests, the key performance of RedCap terminals based on the ASR1903 was comprehensively validated. In various coverage scenarios (good, medium, and poor), both single-user and multi-user throughput showed excellent results. User-plane latency and mobility performance were fully verified, ensuring that RedCap terminals perform excellently and stably in complex scenarios, meeting future diverse application needs.

Additionally, ASR Microelectronics, in collaboration with Huawei’s network, successfully completed the key technology verification for 5G cellular high-precision low-cost positioning. The positioning accuracy achieved meter-level (<3 meters). The testing followed the “5G Enhanced Technology R&D Experiment 5G Cellular Positioning Technical Requirements” and the “5G Enhanced Technology R&D Experiment 5G Cellular Positioning Testing Methods,” validating a low-cost, low-power terminal solution based on RedCap. Using UL-TDoA (Uplink Time Difference of Arrival) 5G cellular positioning technology, this solution is highly applicable to industrial applications such as manufacturing and logistics, as well as consumer-grade scenarios like shopping malls, parking lots, and schools, especially for applications in children’s wearable devices and student cards, ensuring child safety.
